ARTWORKS presents "The Phoenix Show" on February 13th
When you turn more than twenty artists loose with only their imaginations to guide them, the results are amazing. ARTWORKS members have been given free rein to make pieces that can only be described as assemblages, found objects or junk art. The show will open with a reception on Friday, February 13th at 5:30 p.m. The party is free and all are welcome.
Phoenix was the legendary bird of Egyptian and Greek myths that arose from the ashes of its nest and went on to live another 500 years. A lofty comparison, perhaps to the humble act of gathering “stuff” and turning it into art, the name seems fitting for what has evolved from everyday items at the hands of ARTWORKS members.
Janet Sheehan, curator of the Studio Gallery is amazed at what has been created from this unusual three dimensional exhibit.
Basement archives (old useless stuff) , junk drawers in kitchens, stored neglected treasures in attics all became fodder for the artists’ creative impulses. An old Jello mold, nuts and bolts, brass curtain rod fixtures and ceramic door knobs from an old house, shoe forms and even lace doilies became masterpieces in three dimensional form. Many of the pieces are between 5 and 12 inches in size, suitable for a shelf or tabletop while some are life sized and would make stunning accent pieces in any home or shop.
