May 16, 2008 Coffee House
UNCLE EDDIE AND ROBIN
This month Artworks around town will be welcoming back a popular local duo, Ed Mahonen and his wife Robin. Known as Uncle Eddie & Robin, they are not your typical ‘old folkies’. On Friday, May 16th, 2008, our Art Gallery Coffee House begins at 7:30 pm with an Open Mic session for any and all who would like to take the stage and perform. Be sure to get there early to sign up as we can only accommodate you for an hour. Then, at 8:30pm, Uncle Eddie & Robin will complete the evening of musical entertainment which ends at 10pm. The event is free to the public and we will have refreshments and beverages available for your enjoyment while you listen to the music.
Ed & Robin have energy that belies their age and the breadth of their life experience makes for a rich and rewarding musical evening. Their combined voices provide stunning, tight harmonies on songs that pack a punch and their chemistry and sound is unmistakable.
Ed – a “Banjo player, Raconteur, and all around Old Dude” is an icon in the Appellation music scene. He is well known locally for his contribution to the Short Creek Flatpickers, his appearances on Jamboree and his days with the band “Castlemen’s Run”. His wildly imaginative banjo playing, silky vocals, and intelligent witty songwriting make him a joy to listen to. His style incorporates elements of bluegrass and folk, which he has shaped into a unique and original blend which he terms “plunk rock”.
Robin Mahonen is the daughter of the late Jimmy Knepper, an internationally renowned jazz trombonist and Maxine Fields Knepper, a strong independent woman who was already on the road with her trumpet at the age of 16 before anyone had ever coined the term ‘feminist’. Robin played piano at the age of 8, picked up her first guitar at 14, and played her first coffee houses shortly thereafter.
They are currently working on their joint project, "Banjembe" which couples the Banjo with the Djembe Drum and other tribal drumming. Several original songs feature some stunning vocal arrangements on a CD that is every minute worth listening to. Uncle Eddie and Robin are available for small combo engagements and sometimes travel with a small ensemble of other interesting musicians. An evening with Uncle Eddie & Robin is like sitting down with old friends. Kick off your shoes, put up your feet, and open yourself up to a musical experience that will make you laugh, then cry, then laugh again.
